An amazing document: a (fake)
convertible DS, winner in its
category in the 'Round Thailand
Rally in December 1969 ! This
photo is still hanging on the wall of
the office of Khun Pod, whose father
Vithaya Chuchart (left) had a Citroen
garage. Next to him, holding the
trophy, is the owner, Saksit "Dick"
Ittiyarn, who had a car accessory
business and who was a member of
the ARAT (Rally Association). The
rear of the same car can be seen on
the photo below, taken after the
finish, on the parking of the Siam
Intercontinental Hotel, where Siam
Paragon stands today (doc.
Reaungyut Manit). The rally was
organized by the LMSC (Lamthong
Motor Sports Club). Such rallies
were often organized by car
magazines or companies (oil
companies for instance), but the
participation of a Citroen DS must
have been rare.
But wait... Wait.... Isn't that a DS I can see
on this photo of a Beetle, participating to
the 1st Asian Highway Motor Rally, in April
1969 ? This first-of-its-kind rally took 170
participants over 2,097 km from Vientiane
(Laos) to Singapore. I have not been able
to find an entry list yet, but it would be
great if we could find that a DS joined that
unique race ! (Bangkok Post, 19 Apr
1969).
